Clothing Your Preemie

At 45o grams (a pound is 454 grams), Eric was considered a micro-preemie. Which made it a bit difficult to find clothes for him. Not only did the clothes need to fit his itty bitty size, they also needed to accommodate all of the tubes and wires connected to him.

Local stores had sizes that are were too large for him. So back to Google and online shopping. One such place that I had found is Preemies R Us. Lots of cute clothes made for the NICU. Along with clothes, they have pacifiers (that will not interfere with CPAP), snuggle toys and blankets. They only thing they didn’t have, and I wish they did, is a swaddle blanket made for micros in the NICU. Micro-preemies love to be swaddled and it is difficult to find one small enough.

It is a wonderful to finally dress your preemie for the first time. It gives a sense of normalcy and helps to take away some of the fears. For me, it was disheartening to see Eric laying naked in the incubator. Putting him in clothes, as soon as the nurses allowed, helped to give hope that everything was going to be alright. It was another milestone.

Some people feel it is silly to buy preemie clothes since they will grow out of them so quickly. I feel the exact opposite. Whatever you need to do to help you through the NICU experience, do it! Find your happiness where you can and when you can. There will be days enough that will break you down.

The best part of dressing your preemie in cute little clothes? When he grows out of them! It is well worth the price to know your little one is growing bigger and stronger every day. It is often hard to see the growth when you are with your baby every day. Outgrowing the clothes helps to reiterate it. The clothes also make wonderful keepsakes to show your little one when he is older.

Please also remember that NICUs need preemie clothes desperately, especially for little boys! Our experience was that boy outfits were very hard to find in the NICU. Micro-preemie clothes were hard to find at all. I saved Eric's sweetest outfits and donated the rest.
