Day 100 for Eric
Eric has been recovering nicely from his double hernia surgery on Tuesday. He was a bit grump and tired today, so bottle feeding did not go as well as hoped. Eric is currently only on his thyroid medication and vitamins, plus the 60 ccs of infant directed fortified breast milk every 3hrs. Infant directed means that if Eric wants more than 60 ccs and seems hungry, he can get additional food.
As a side note, Joanna's breast milk was tested for calorie and nutrition content. Normal breast milk is 20 kcal per ounce (about 29.6 ccs) and hers has been fortified by 2 additional kcal per ounce. Well, the tests revealed that Joanna's breast milk is about 29 kcal per ounce. This basically means that Eric has been getting about 50% more calories than expected. This probably explains his chunkyness. Currently Eric is at about 5lbs and 13 oz, which is really good considering the surgery he went through.
Eric is still not consistent on his ability to bottle feed. Until Eric can get the whole eating on his own down, he will still be a guest of the NICU. We are still hopefull that Eric can come home sooner rather than later, but no dates have been given yet. Eric is also on 100ml per min oxygen flow, which is really good as well.
