December 6th Eric Update
Cris:
Well, Eric has been growing, although a bit slower and at his own pace. He is currently at exactly 11 lbs. He is an adjusted 3 1/2 months of age currently, although some of his development is lagging just a little bit, for the most part he is doing well. We have a physical therapist that is going to start coming to the house to help out a bit as Eric is low on the physical and adaptive development scores. This is covered under one of the many state paid for health programs for preemies. Currently, Eric is recovering from Thrush, which is a common baby yeast infection, and you can read more about what that is here at http://www.webmd.com/oral-health/tc/thrush-topic-overview. We found out on Thursday that he had a pretty nasty case of Thrush, but he is responding well to treatment. This explains his extra grumpiness the last week or so, and why we have not yet done the professional pictures that we wanted to.
Eric is just now starting to be able to kind of sit up on his own, but still lacks the motor control to stay upright on his own for long. Eric definitely has the cutest little chubby cheeks. He also has a great smile as well, when he can be coaxed into giving it. Eric is still on breast milk and will be for some time yet, as that has made a real difference in his life. Thursday we did try Eric on some plain yogurt and a little bit of Happy Bellies Pro-biotic rice cereal (found at both Babies R Us and at Fry's) added to some of his breast milk, per pediatric advice. Like most preemies, his digestion needs a little help.Eric generally prefers just breast milk, and so we have not pushed him into eating much yogurt or adding rice cereal to more than just 1 bottle of breast milk in day. In about 3 months if things go well, he will hopefully follow the normal baby trend and start on basic solids to supplement breast milk.
Eric is still a ways off from crawling or rolling over, but he has been starting to interact more with his toys. His mouth definitely is his main sense organ though, as he likes to try to taste everything he can get his hands onto. Fortunately we still have time to finish child-proofing the house, as he is not even up to crawling at this point. :)
Eric is still off the oxygen the last month and doing well despite the latest hiccups. Everyday he reminds of how truly lucky we are as his parents.
