Breakthrough
Finally some breakthroughs! For the first time since his hospital stay, Eric did not lose weight! He didn't gain any either, but at least he did not lose. The doctors have said this problem did not start overnight and it cannot be expected to be resolved overnight. The fact that Eric is now able to maintain his weight is quite significant.
Eric can come home on the ND-tube (not the NJ-tube that I mentioned in Twitter. Sorry about that, I got confused). They have already given us the equipment and they will show us how to use it. It is only for nighttime feedings.
They are still bumping up his calories and eventually want him up to 30 calories per ounce. They are using Polycose since it is tasteless and Eric tolerates it. Right now we are up to 26 calories and they will be bumping it again soon. They are doing it slowly to make sure that Eric is tolerating it. Since the ND-tube bypasses the stomach and goes to the upper large (or small, Cris and I are still a little confused on that one) intestine, the food is being digested in a completely different manner.
It will take another week before we can come home. Right now we are waiting for Eric to gain weight. He is tolerating his meds a bit more since they have been dripped instead of gavaged, but he still throws up when given them.
Also, they are slowly advancing the ND-tube through his intestines, so he may end up with an NJ-tube after all.
