Eric Update for 2-13-09
Eric continues to have trouble eating and now the poor kid has also picked up a stomach virus so he is throwing up even more. Thursday he threw up at least 6oz, and so far for Friday, he has thrown up 4 0z. Eric has started losing weight, and while he is still smiling and happy, has serious trouble keeping his food down. One of his medications he is on has not only be not helping, but has actually contributed to his vomiting problems. His PICU doctor has discontinued that medication and they are trying something else. Eric has also been having severe diarrhea today on top of everything else.
The upper GI exam did not reveal any problems, but it is only a snapshot in time. No blockages detected, which is a very good thing. Things they are thinking about at this time is a pH monitor in his esophagus as they are pretty sure he just has a severe case of reflux. It is looking likely that they will have to surgically implant a GI tube for Eric to help with feeding. Hopefully it will just be a short term solution for a year or two at the most till he grows out of the reflux. They are also going to do a biopsy to see if Eric has developed any allergies. While rare, this does happen. fWe are hoping that is not the problem.
We will try to update the blog as we know more. Looks like Eric will be staying at UMC for at least another 4 or 5 days minimum, and probably longer if they end up doing the surgery. Fortunately, we are allowed to sleep next to Eric in his room so we are always close by.
